The average 1-bedroom is now $1,680, which accounts for more than 60% of the average monthly earnings for workers. Meanwhile, rents across metro Orlando have been skyrocketing since the pandemic. Here in Orlando, Disney competitor Universal Parks & Resorts has released plans for its own housing development, which include a 1,000-unit mixed-income community with tuition-free preschool and medical care located near the site of its upcoming newest park, Epic Universe. The company also is initiating the Storyliving by Disney residential communities, with the first development being built in Rancho Mirage, CA. In the same area, the company also runs the Flamingo Crossings Village, which houses cast members (mostly College Program) in dormitory-style apartments that fit two or four people, starting at $649 for a private bedroom and bathroom in an apartment with shared kitchen and living room. Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings applauded the Disney announcement, saying it was “stepping up to the plate to set the standard for corporate engagement in this community.” With this initiative, we’re lending a hand to make a real and meaningful impact in our community by tapping into the best of our company’s strengths.” “The lack of affordable housing is affecting many people across our country, including right here in Central Florida. “We are invested in working together with our community to solve complex issues,” said Jeff Vahle, president of Walt Disney World Resort, in the release. The company says the upcoming development will be available for qualifying applicants from the general public, which includes Disney cast members.ĭisney hasn’t revealed any other details, including what expected rents will be, other than to say this project will be a multi-year project and there is currently no timeline for completion. This is located just west of Disney’s Animal Kingdom, on the other side of Hwy 429. It will be build by a third party developer, and located in close proximity to schools and the new and expanding Flamingo Crossings Town Center retail and dining complex. That’s why I personally think it’s bullshit they got rid of all of the old housing and only gave us such an expensive option.Walt Disney World has announced plans to build more than 1,300 affordable housing units across about 80 acres near the west side of the property. For these offers going out to us so last minute, we barely have time to even save and get ourselves organized. I had a lot of money saved up, but bc of covid and this past year, I had to break into it where I don’t have as much left. Again, I never said it wasn’t doable, it’s just not a lot of money and it’s concerning we don’t even know what our roles are, which play a role in how much you’ll work. If you have a car, or any extra expenses like a car payment for the month, credit card bills, it can easily wipe you out. 680 a month to live by yourself isn’t that much money- especially since a big draw of the program is to go to the parks which is absolutely ridiculous in prices for food. If you take 10% of of that which is the tax by me, it’s about 170. I’m gonna average it out to about 200 for rent since the rent is between 175-215 I believe? Without tax, youre left with 190. They raised it to 13 an hour so 13x30=390. To calculate with the 30 you expect- the 30 hours was without tax, which I have no clue how much they take out of their checks. I’d love to see where it says a guaranteed 30 to ease my nerves about it, but I haven’t seen it anywhere. I sure hope I get at least 30, but many people I’ve spoken to who have done the program have said they had enough shifts to pay rent, and that’s it. It depends on the roles, and how easy it is to pick up shifts depends on that. Well to start, I have heard absolutely different things about the hours you get.
